Viruses are the colds and flus of computer security: ubiquitous, at times impossible to avoid despite the best efforts and often very costly to an organization's productivity.

NIST recommends using a two-tiered approach for detecting and preventing viruses from spreading:

  • On personal computers, install and use anti-virus software capable of scanning disks, attachments to email, files downloaded from the web, and documents generated by word processing and spreadsheet programs.
  • Use anti-virus software at Internet gateways or firewalls to scan email attachments and other downloaded files.

Anti-virus software should be installed when the personal computer is initially configured. The software should be updated weekly with new virus definitions, and your vendor may provide an automated update feature. Organizations may benefit from using several brands of anti-virus software.

No PC today should be running without an updated AntiVirus program. Updated means that the AntiVirus program should have a current virus pattern, reference or definition file from within the last seven days. E-mailing, file sharing, disk sharing, and simply browsing the Internet can all potentially cause a computer virus infection.

COMPUTER FIREWALLS.

A Firewall is a software program that, if installed correctly, can keep your information safe from other prying eyes on the Internet. Do not depend on the firewall built into Windows XP. It will not block transmissions from backdoor programs.

Spyware is a menace. For most users, it's a bigger threat than viruses or hackers. Spyware can gather information about you and relay it to marketers. It can cause ads to pop up, hard drives to slow down and CD drives to open and close. It can even hijack the home page of your browser. U may use Spyware Guide to look up progams/software that could be already installed on your computer at:

Spybot - Search & Destroy can detect and remove spyware of different kinds from your computer. Spyware is a relatively new kind of threat that common anti-virus applications do not yet cover. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you didn't intentionally install, if your browser crashes, or if you browser start page has changed without your knowing, you most probably have spyware. But even if you don't see anything, you may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging that is silently tracking your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile of you that will be sold to advertisement companies. Spybot-S&D is free, so there's no harm in trying to see if something snooped into your computer, too :)
